Rio Doce Thematic Notebooks

Interdisciplinary Nucleus of Education, Health and Law - NIESD

Dear reader,

You are being invited to learn about this informative material, of an educational nature, whose objective is to disseminate qualified information among the population about the Doce River.

The target audience for this material is the community in general, children, adolescents, young people and adults who live in the Doce river basin, especially in Governador Valadares and region. Thematic notebooks can contribute to discussions in different groups, schools, universities and with researchers interested in the Doce River and the environmental agenda.

The proposal for preparing the notebooks is the result of the research “Relationship with knowledge and environmental education”, whose objective was “to understand the relationships that full-time students establish with the Doce River, as an object of knowledge”. In the research process, students reported demands for knowledge related to: water quality, presence of heavy metals in the river, consequences of the disaster, history of the Doce river, future of the river, communities that live off the river, legal issues related to indemnities, among others. When reviewing the literature produced on the Doce River and the rupture of the Fundão dam, the research team identified the lack of informative materials, in a language accessible to the population, about the knowledge produced within the academy.

Thematic notebooks aim to fill this gap.

We wish you all a good reading!
